Alamogordo, NM Landfill Atari was convinced licensed properties such as Pac-Man and E.T. The Extra Terrestrial could become best selling games that they produced more cartridges than Atari 2600 consoles at the time.
The games were not popular and were rushed to market, making consumers unhappy. As the video game industry imploded around almost everybody in 1983-1984, Atari shipped truckloads of unsold game cartridges to the landfill in Alamogordo, NM to crush and bury them forever.
While the gaming industry in North America would be forced back to life by Nintendo several years later, the legend of the Alamogordo landfill continued as a topic of conversation. Search engine inquiries actually uncovered several blogs of gamers who made a journey to the infamous location.
For becoming the biggest urban legend in video game history, the Alamogordo, NM landfill becomes the 19th entry into the Registry.
